good on Europe, not on the Americas
(2003-06-13)
A comprehensive account of the Spanish Empire stretched over three centuries, from Europe, to the Americas, to The Philippines. Interesting how Henry Kamen shows that Spain always viewed their empire from Europe--the other colonies viewed only as a source of marketable commodities, to pay for the armies and alliances necessary to defend the former. Covers Ferdinand and Isabella, too, including their travels to the colonies during their thirty-year joint reign; the nature of Spain's armies (good) and navies (weak); and the circumstances leading to the acquisition of some colonies including Granada.
But Prof Kamen being a historian of Spain in Europe, his expertise appears to end there. On matters in America, his accounts are patchy if not outright fancifully selective, and in a number of parts erroneous, albeit minor.
The book is published in Britain as "Spain's Road to Empire", half a year before it first came out in America.
With sixteen pages of illustrations, and eleven black-and-white photos.
